Determination of cloud microphysical properties from AVHRR images: comparisons of three approaches

چکیده
This contribution to the EUCREX mission 206 series aims at evaluating the performances of Ž three methods considered for the retrieval of cloud microphysical properties optical depth, droplet Ž .. effective radius and liquid water path LWP from Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Ž . AVHRR satellite images. These procedures, namely a set of empirical parameterizations, a physically based inversion code, and a neuronal approach, are tested with the mission 206 case study. The influence of horizontal averaging on the retrieved cloud properties is also investigated to assess the limitations of the comparison between satellite observations and aircraft measurements performed at a smaller scale. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Remote Sensing Based Retrieval of Snow Cover Properties Case Study (Shirkooh Mountain Yazd, Iran)
Snow cover area is one of the most important criteria to calculate snow melt runoff. This can have an effect on the biology of the plant and the environment of a region. Using the catchment basin physical characteristic to calculate snow cover area is a conventional method, though its accuracy is not good enough. Most of the useful methods in calculating snow cover area are based on satellite i...

متن کاملAutomatic detection of fire smoke using artificial neural networks and threshold approaches applied to AVHRR imagery
In this study, satellite-based remote sensing techniques were developed for identifying smoke from forest fires. Both artificial neural networks (NN) and multithreshold techniques were explored for application with imagery from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) aboard NOAA satellites. The NN was designed such that it does not only classify a scene into smoke, cloud, or clear ...
متن کاملNear-real time cloud properties and aircraft icing indices from GEO and LEO satellites
Imagers on many of the current and future operational meteorological satellites in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) and lower Earth orbit (LEO) have enough spectral channels to derive cloud microphysical properties useful for a variety of applications. The products include cloud amount, phase, optical depth, temperature, height and pressure, thickness, effective particle size, and ice or liquid ...
متن کاملComparisons of Cloud Microphysical Properties Retrieved from Different Algorithms during Aerosol Transport Events
Multi-spectral data from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra spacecraft are used to derive cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius using the algorithm of Nakajima and Nakajima (1995). Microphysical cloud properties are retrieved during strong aerosol events from biomass burning to better understand the actual effects of cloud-aerosol interac...
